Six plants that were trusted long before anyone could describe their chemistry, and that modern research has since found worth its attention. We're not going to tell you what they will do for you. We'd rather tell you what they are.
Isolated actives are the supplement model applied to skincare. We use the whole plant.
Extract a compound, concentrate it, deliver it at maximum dose: that is how most actives reach a formula. Whole-plant preparation works the way food works differently from a vitamin pill. Kumkumadi is not one ingredient but twenty-six, infused together into a sesame base over weeks. We make it the way it has been made because that is the version with a record behind it, not because we have improved on it.
Who prepares them
These plants are handled by people, not machinery.
Mahua flowers are gathered from the forest floor at dawn. Roots are ground by hand, mortar on stone. Oils are infused over weeks rather than minutes, and watched by the women doing it.
The knowledge of how long to infuse and when it is ready did not come from a manual. It came from the generation before.

The ingredient that gives Kumkumadi its name and most of its cost. Around a hundred and fifty flowers go into a single gram, each stigma picked by hand at dawn.

Crocin and safranal, the compounds behind saffron's colour and scent, are among the more heavily researched molecules in botanical chemistry.

The tree this brand is named for. Its flowers are gathered at dawn from the floor; its seeds are pressed for a fat that women in Jharkhand have used on skin and hair for as long as anyone there can account for.

Analysis of mahua seed fat shows it is high in oleic and stearic acid, with a fatty acid profile in the same territory as shea butter.

Cooling, in the sense the word is used about heat in the body rather than temperature on the skin. The fragrance was treated as medicine as much as the oil was.

Sandalwood oil is dominated by santalols, and alpha-santalol in particular has been the subject of a long line of published research.

A root, and a dye plant before it was ever a skincare ingredient — it stains a deep red, which is how most people first meet it.

Manjistha root contains a family of anthraquinones, purpurin and munjistin among them, which are what most of the published chemistry has concentrated on.

Called the ruler of hair in Ayurvedic practice, and used across generations on scalp and length — warmed, worked in, and left overnight.

What science looked at
The plant's chemistry has been catalogued in some detail, wedelolactone being the compound most often named. The research that exists is largely preclinical, and we'd rather say so than imply a body of evidence that isn't there yet.
None of this was discovered. It was recorded, used, and passed on by people who watched what happened.
The lab arrived late, and has spent most of its time describing what was already being used.
